"Romola," set in 15th-century Florence, was published in 1863. Eliot drew on her extensive knowledge of Italian history to create the novel, which focuses on the life of Romola, a young woman who becomes influenced by the Florentine painter Sandro Botticelli and his artistic and political circle.
